It’s relatively rare that a truly world class golf course opens its doors to the corporate market. The World top-50 ranked, nine time Open Championship venue, and former Ryder Cup venue of Royal Birkdale is an exception.
It needn’t be completely straight-forward though. These prestige days have to be played on a Thursday or Friday, and are limited to 72 golfers. We might find we need to fit around other likeminded players, but then we also need to see this in the context of the opportunity. Royal Birkdale is widely regarded as England’s finest links course, and having established that status it stands to reason that only the heathland courses of Surrey might be considered better
Birkdale sits in amongst a high dunes system on the Lancashire just a few miles from Southport. It means visitors can choose to base themselves in the high-octane city of Liverpool less than an hour away, or choose the altogether more sedate surroundings of Southport in a classy hotel overlooking the marina
A corporate golf package that combines Royal Birkdale with Liverpool blends together the two most critical ingredients. A high class venue that is guaranteed to impress, plus an evening location where you won’t go short for things to do!
You can of course get to Liverpool using road, plane or train, although if you use the latter from southern England it might be prudent to avoid the final leg and perhaps we should arrange a transfer from Manchester

Whereas the debate as to Scotland’s best links is rages, the argument over England’s finest is much less contentious. With its signature high dunes and treacherous swirling wind blowing through the fairway valleys, few dispute Royal Birkdale’s. Consistently assessed to be in the world’s top-50, Birkdale has hosted the Open championship nine times and most recently in 2017 when Jordan Spieth prevailed. The 6th and 13th are notable challenges and the 18th overlooked by the its magnificent white art deco clubhouse is instantly recognisable
Liverpool
Liverpool has to be one of the hardest cities in the UK to get a handle on. The city is actually humming with a vibrant arts and entertainment scene. The Walker Gallery, the Tate, the Everyman theatre, and that’s before we even touch on the whole Beatles industry and any end of bands that have their origins in the city. In truth, we at Faraway Fairways have a confession to make. It wasn’t until we began to investigate it that we started to realise just what a remarkable place Liverpool is
Accommodation
This is choice is about location really. The 4-star hotel, at 31 James Street, Liverpool is unique. At face value you might think it’s an OTT Titanic themed hotel. The thing is though, the distinctive red brick building is the renovated head office of the White Star Line. It’s link and authenticity is genuine, so it might be forgiven for pushing the boundaries
If you wanted a more restrained 4-star away from the distractions of Liverpool, than the Bliss Hotel that overlooks Southport’s marina might be altogether more appealing proposition
